What to Expect at your Family Portrait Session

What to Expect at your Family Portrait Session

Let me guess, walls are looking pretty boring? Maybe you have a new addition to the family? Or wait, don’t tell me! You have older kids who you know if you don’t do a family portrait session now, you won’t get another chance? I’m not here to suggest I have all the answers, but my families tend to fit into one of those 3 categories. Anyway, I digress, you’re here, and that is the main thing! You’re getting a family portrait session, how exciting!

But, there is always that nagging fear in the back of your head, right? You know the one. The voice telling you that your kids are going to misbehave and everything is going to go wrong. Maybe you are listening to that voice telling you it will be awkward and so you should be nervous. I’m not in your head unfortunately, so I can’t tell you exactly, but what I can do is give you a lovely little breakdown of what to expect at your family portrait session, so that you can be the best prepared parent you can possibly be.

How does that sound? Of course it sounds great, that’s why you clicked this link after all! Let’s do it, follow me.

    1. The Vibe is going to be amazing!

If you haven’t worked with me before, or know someone who has, let me start by explaining to you how I do what I do! It’s not enough to just tell you what I do, so many people take family photographs, but you chose me. How do I get such beautiful photos? Is it in my settings? Is it in the quality of my gear? Maybe my understanding of editing software? No! I make all my portrait sessions fun! Not just fun, but unbelievably fun. I will create a genuine connection with you and your family, not because I have to, but because I want to! Everyone’s family is so unique and quirky, I love getting to know them.

By doing this, it really does help to bring your children out of their shells, and allows them to show me who they truly are. It sounds corny, but hear me out. When your children drop their barriers like this, so will you! You can’t help it! You see your kids having fun and acting natural, and you will emulate them. Amazing, connection created. Everyone is having a blast, people are crying from laughter (it has happened numerous times, bring spare makeup if you wear it).

TLDR: You can expect an amazing fun vibe from your family portrait session. This is how I get such beautiful images, I create a safe, fun, relaxed environment.

    2. Kids will be kids

And they told me I could never get the perfect segway between paragraphs! That’s a lie, no one ever told me that, but I’ve always wanted to say it! So what does it mean? Well, if everyone is having fun and being naturally who they are, well your kids might go a bit mental. They might get a bit crazy and wild. Is this a problem? No! Hello candid shots!

Ideally, I will aim to get all my major compositions early in the session when kids are easy to work with, this shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. After this, I have my shots, so I will encourage your kids to play, and to be a bit crazy. This is usually not difficult for them so they jump at it.

Why is this a good thing? Well let me ask you a question. Would you rather an entire gallery of images of your child behaving like the perfect little angel, even though they might be a little devil child (thankfully they are cute and you love them, right?)? Or would you rather a gallery which has a combination of them behaving and also being mental? So that way, when you look at your images on your wall, or on your office desk, you are reminded of exactly who your kids really are. Your true family, not a fabrication of who they are, or what society thinks they should be. These are your kids, my goal is to capture them as they really are.

TLDR: Kids will be kids, during your family portrait session, expect a combination of posed compositions, as well as your kids mucking about, having fun, being a bit crazy!

    3. I will take a variety of photos

I swear, I am not doing this on purpose, but hello perfect segway number 2! You can expect a combination of images from your family portrait session. What kind of combination I hear you asking? Think of the kind of massive prints hanging on your wall currently, or maybe hanging in your parents home. Everyone looking beautiful staring into the camera and smiling. That is what we call a ‘wall art’ shot. Everyone wants them, they are absolutely lovely and can really engage families emotions when they view them.

Ok, that’s awesome, so what about the other photos? I’m so glad you asked! I have 2 other styles. The first one is plain and simple candid shots. You already know what these are, and I explained above how I get them, so I won’t insult you here by going over it again. The final thing I do is some more creative artistic styled shots. I get it, this probably doesn’t mean much to you at this point. Basically it is a combination between some simple posing, but being candid within a slightly controlled moment. For example, I might say to dad “pick up your little girl and just interact with her”. What they then do is totally up to them, but given the little instructions I gave them, I can set myself up for some cracking candid and artistic shots.

TLDR: You will get a combination of shots, everyone looking at the camera, combination of siblings and parents, as well as some more candid shots that will reflect your families true nature.

    4. Time will fly!

So what do we already know? We know that I am going to create a genuine connection with you, and because of this it is going to be a really relaxed environment. We know your family is going to have loads of fun, and potentially laugh for an entire hour (Disclaimer: I am not responsible if your jaw hurts after the session from too much smiling and laughing). On top of this, we know that there will be a combination of shots, in which your kids will have the opportunity to be crazy and just be themselves. This should keep you on your toes! Now trust me when I tell you, before you realise it, that hour session will be up.

If I had a dollar for every time I informed a family that the session was finished and I had all the images I needed, I would have about $267 (I just checked my system for that information). Unfortunately I don’t get paid for saying that, which I personally think is really rough on me, but I still persevere.

We all know the saying ‘time flies when you are having fun’ don’t we? Well this is no different. I’m not having you on when I tell you how much fun you will have. I have parents concerned that I couldn’t have gotten many photos because it’s surely only been 15 minutes. I then have to inform them it has been 60 and I have over 400 shots. It is usually at this point people want to stay longer. Maybe because they like hanging out with me? Probably not, probably because the kids are having so much fun, and so are they that they don’t want it to end. I choose to take this as the ultimate compliment. Remember, heaps of people take beautiful family portraits, so these kind of comments just cement that the way I do what I do is perfect. Doesn’t get much better than that if you ask me!
TLDR: The session will race by, before you know it, it will be over! That’s what happens when you are having fun!

So, what to expect from your family portrait session?

I think we can safely say you know what to expect from your family portrait session now, right? Great times, lots of energy and craziness, and a sudden surprise when I tell you it’s all over! For anyone already booked in to shoot with me, I cannot wait to meet you and create such beautiful lifelong memories. If you are sitting on the fence, I highly recommend getting a family portrait session done. Time is one thing we can never get back, don’t let it slip away, capture the moments now as they happen. One day both you and your children will look back on it fondly.
